Cover crop planting practices determine their performance in the U.S. Corn Belt

چکیده

Cover crop growing periods in the western U.S. Corn Belt could be extended by planting earlier. We evaluated both pre-harvest broadcast interseeding and post-harvest drilling of following cover crops: (a) cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) [RYE]; (b) a mix + legumes brassicas [MIX1], (c) oat [Avena sativa L.] (MIX2), (d) [LEGU]) (e) no control. These were tested continuous corn (Zea mays [corn–corn] soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]–corn systems [soybean–corn] at three sites Nebraska for their effect on productivity, soil nutrients, subsequent performance. At with wet fall weather, broadcasting increased biomass 90%, to 1.29 Mg ha−1 RYE 0.87 MIX1 soybean–corn, 0.56 0.39 corn–corn, respectively. drier site, 95% 0.80 soybean–corn. Biomass N uptake was highest two soybean–corn (35 kg ha−1). sometimes mixes reduced N, but effects P, K, organic C inconsistent. In yields decreased 4% after RYE, crops. Site-specific selection crops practices can increase performance while minimizing impacts corn.

Weather Anomalies, Crop Yields, and Migration in the US Corn Belt

We investigate the influence of weather anomalies on net migration in the Eastern United States using a county-level panel for the period from 1970 to 2009. There is a significant weather-migration relationship in the Corn Belt, but not outside of it. We present evidence that weather affects migration through its influence on agricultural productivity using an instrumental variables approach. O...

Warming Nighttime Temperatures and Crop Health in the Corn Belt

Over the last century nighttime minimum temperatures have been increasing at a faster rate than daily maximum temperatures. This warming trend has caught the attention of climatologists and agricultural scientists as they attempt to address the potential effects of elevated nighttime minimum temperatures on the health of these crops, which are so important to the U.S. economy. In this study, te...

Breeding Maize for Drought Tolerance in the US Corn-Belt

The objective of this review is to promote discussion on some of the key issues we consider to be involved in successful long-term genetic improvement of corn for drought tolerance. Many of the concepts have been discussed elsewhere for different crops, traits and different breeding targets. Here we focus on how to organize a comprehensive effort to enable breeding for drought tolerance in a he...

Rapid corn and soybean mapping in US Corn Belt and neighboring areas

The goal of this study was to promptly map the extent of corn and soybeans early in the growing season. A classification experiment was conducted for the US Corn Belt and neighboring states, which is the most important production area of corn and soybeans in the world. To improve the timeliness of the classification algorithm, training was completely based on reference data and images from othe...
